The Hawaiian Shirt

AKA the Aloha Shirt…

Originating in Hawaii circa 1920 and originally made from Kimono cloth they were the attire of the tourist until they reached the shores of America in 1930. As the wealthy American’s returned home with this new trend it became a popular feel good fashion item for a country that had been in the midst of a depression.

Did you know that in the early 1960's a campaign called "Operation Liberation" recommended the male populace to 'aloha attire'. This meant during the summer months for the sake of comfort, and in support of the 50th state's garment industry, Hawaiian shirts would be worn. This later developed into "casual Friday" primarily in the US and remains a timeless classic.

Worn by some of the biggest actors in many blockbusters their popularity continues season after season. From Johnny Depp in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Al Pacino in Scarface and of course Tom Selleck as Magnum P.I.

The Hawaiian shirt will divide opinions. Here at Frangipani we design a couple of prints each season and they are ever popular.

The shirts are made from Wood & Bamboo pulp. A material that hangs beautifully, breathes well and has a super smooth finish. These designs are ever popular on the DJ scene
