Wanderlust Weekender: 48-hours in Jaipur

Jaipur, the vibrant capital of Rajasthan, is a city where history, culture, and luxury beautifully collide at a magical, frenetic pace. Known as the 'Pink City' due to its distinctive terracotta-coloured buildings, Jaipur is home to stunning palaces, historic forts, bustling bazaars, and rich heritage.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a shopaholic, or a foodie, Jaipur offers something for every Indophile. With just 48 hours to explore here are Suzie, our Managing Director who has been travelling to the city for over 20 years, top tips on where to visit, shop and stay:

Day 1: Explore the City's Palaces and Forts

Morning:
Start your day with a visit to Amber Fort, one of Jaipur’s most iconic landmarks. Located just 11km outside the city, this stunning hill fort is renowned for its grand architecture, the intricate Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace), and breathtaking views of the surrounding hills. Spend a couple of hours exploring its courtyards, halls, and the beautiful gardens. It's worth getting an official guide at the entrance to help you navigate the sprawling complex.

After Amber Fort, head to Jaigarh Fort, a short drive away (below right). Perched even higher on the Aravalli Hills, the fort offers panoramic views back towards Jaipur. It’s a great spot for photos and a deeper dive into Jaipur’s military history.

Lunch:
Head to Anokhi Shop & Café, located in the city centre. Here, you can enjoy fresh, lighter dishes like salads and wraps while exploring Anokhi's hand-block printed clothing and accessories. If you're interested in Indian heritage textile skills, don’t miss the Anokhi Museum in Amber on your way back from the fort.

Afternoon:
After lunch, visit Hawa Mahal, the "Palace of Winds." This iconic Jaipur landmark was built in 1799; designed to allow royal women, Maharanis, to observe the street below without being seen through the fretwork windows. Climb to the top for a fantastic view of the city or visit the cafe opposite for the best view of the palace itself (above).

Evening:
As the day winds down, head to Rambagh Palace, a luxurious hotel that was once the residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur. Even if you’re not staying there, you can pop in for a gin and tonic on the terrace and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere while watching peacocks roam the manicured lawns. Looking for a more lively evening activity? There's also the opportunity to see a traditional Rajasthani performance.

Dinner:
For a memorable dinner, visit The Johri Hotel in the heart of Jaipur’s jewellery district. The 19th-century boutique haveli has been updated to offer a modern take on traditional vegetarian dishes, focussing on local, seasonal produce.

Day 2: Discover Jaipur’s Heritage, Culture, and Shopping

Morning:

If you want 5-star-luxury stay at the Oberoi or Taj or Leela, but if you want to see a Palace steeped in history Nirain Niwas is the place to stay. Built in 1928, today it’s one of the best heritage hotels in Jaipur, offering a stay in a home that once belonged to royals - “Niwas” meaning a royal abode. It’s not the most up-to-date hotel so you must forgive some of its quirks but you will be rewarded with its beautiful charm and amazing staff that are always so welcoming. It’s in a great central location and has an interesting small shopping courtyard in its grounds - definitely visit Hot Pink! There are some also interesting Indian designers, jewellers, and homeware stores. Their café Orlenes is also a great place to relax. I always stay here for the historic ambience and tranquil vibe whilst just a tuk tuk ride away from the bustling bazaars. Alternatively stay at the wonderful Samode Haveli a family favourite with beautiful palatial interiors (below).

Lunch:
For lunch, stop by Bar Palladio Jaipur (below) located within the Narain Niwas Palace itself. This stunning garden restaurant is known for its Instagram-worthy interiors, excellent food, and buzzing atmosphere after 9pm. Whether you dine alfresco or indoors, you’ll be surrounded by stunning architectural details and vibrant colours.

Afternoon:
In the afternoon, visit Riddhi Siddhi Saurashtra Oriental Arts, a shop dedicated to vintage textiles, including handwoven kantha quilts and block-printed fabrics. It’s a treasure trove for anyone interested in Indian textiles and traditional crafts.

Afterward, head to the Jantar Mantar (below), an astronomical observatory built in the 18th century. It’s an excellent spot to learn about ancient Indian science and astronomy, with its massive instruments still in working condition.

Dinner:
End your trip with a memorable meal at Dera Amer for an authentic Rajasthani dining experience. Located just outside the city, it offers a traditional setting where you can enjoy regional delicacies, often accompanied by live arts performances.
